For Mirah Mahaswari, politics is far from the cold, distant halls of government buildings; it is woven into the very fabric of our living rooms and the upbringing of our children. An academic, a PhD candidate, and a mother, Mirah is redefining what it means to be a “political animal” in the modern age, shifting the gaze from grand power plays to the intimate, essential sphere of childcare policy.
A Curious Mind in Motion
Mirah describes herself as a blend of active curiosity and critical observation. Her journey is fueled by a relentless desire to contribute to her social environment and a sharp eye for government policy. Since 2017, she has been a foundational voice at Udayana University’s Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP). Currently, she is expanding her horizons in Melbourne as a Teaching Fellow at Monash University, navigating the rigors of a PhD in Politics and International Relations.
The Purpose of Life: Designing a Child-Friendly Future
The transition to motherhood was a catalyst for Mirah, revealing the profound intersection between political science and the daily reality of raising a child. This realization evolved into a “purpose of life”: developing a child-friendly Indonesia through robust political policy.
Her commitment is both intellectual and boots-on-the-ground:
- The Foundation: After completing her Master’s in London, she established the Ramah Anak Foundation in Bali, inspired by the family-friendly parks and libraries she experienced abroad.
- The Grassroots: She brought her vision to the village of Karangasem, initiating community playdates by utilizing village fund allocations.
- The Venture: Bridging the gap between theory and practice, she also founded a professional daycare center in Bali.
- The Thesis: Her current doctoral research tackles the hypothesis of why the Indonesian government has historically been slow to provide childcare interventions.
The Art of the Juggle
Life in Australia has introduced a new set of challenges. Operating without domestic help, Mirah masters the “juggling act” of a high-level career, demanding studies, and domestic life. She finds inspiration in the Australian system, a culture that respects the “Right to Disconnect” on weekends and offers deep support for working parents.
A Branding of Authenticity
In the world of academia, Mirah’s personal brand is built on accessibility. She views herself as an approachable figure, prioritizing the needs of her students and the collaboration of her colleagues. Her growth is a continuous cycle of constructive feedback, mentorship from senior professors, and participation in global conferences.
A Global Mindset with Local Integrity
Beyond her professional titles, Mirah’s value lies in her open-mindedness. She consciously challenges her own perspectives, blending an Indonesian upbringing with a global discourse. Whether it is the simple discipline of a queue or the unwavering integrity of navigating bureaucracy without shortcuts, she embodies a lifestyle of principled action.
Mirah Mahaswari is not just studying policy; she is dreaming of a world where the state cares as much for the next generation as a mother does and she is writing the blueprint to make it happen
